Switzerland is the seventh best country on the European continent in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025 with 234 courses entered. Out of these 234 fields of study, 13 percent improved their standing versus the previous year and 44 percent declined. A total of 34 percent remained stable in the same place and 22 were newly added.

In an announcement, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the London-based publisher of this ranking list, stated that with 29 subjects in the top 10 in the world, Switzerland places fourth. It also has the third highest number of entries in first place, despite only being represented with a fraction of the subject entries compared to its closest competitors, the UK and the USA. According to QS, this shows “its exceptional higher education system and the concentration of academic excellence.”

The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) is home to the world’s best courses for geophysics, geology, and earth and marine sciences. With the fourth highest number of entries, the ETH is one of the most highly rated universities globally. Also the subject of hospitality is dominated by Swiss institutes, which include the EHL Hospitality Business School in Lausanne, described by QS as a global leader, taking three top places for best course in the world and with eight entries in the top ten.

The University of Zurich and the University of Bern shone among the top ten in the field for dentistry. The University of Zurich registered the biggest improvement in the subjects for chemistry, climbing from place 151-200 to 122. The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) comes in tenth for the subject area of engineering and technology and in eleventh for natural sciences. It rose from place 11 to 10 for engineering. The University of St.Gallen made it to 18th place for marketing.

Additionally, Swiss graduates enjoy an outstanding reputation among international employers. Their esteem increased by a further 29 percent versus the previous year.

Two Swiss universities topped their subject tables for the h-index, which measures research quality. The University of Bern occupied first place for this indicator for dentistry (in ninth overall) and the Vetsuisse Faculty in Bern and Zurich came in pole position for veterinary science (seventh overall).

The rankings provide an independent, comparative analysis of the performance of more than 21,000 academic options at over 1,700 universities across 100 countries and territories in 55 subjects and the five fields of arts & humanities, engineering and technology, life sciences & medicine, natural sciences, and social sciences & management.
